What Foods We Need to Eat to Keep Our Teeth Healthy and White

The whiteness and health of your teeth depend not only on basic care but also on the food you eat. You can see a dentist every so often and use popular whitening products but if you love certain foods, that less-than-perfect smile will keep coming back. You should pay attention to the foods you eat and how they affect the health of your teeth.

Here at FoxSumo, we’ve made a compilation of different foods that have a positive or negative influence on the appearance of one’s teeth.

Foods that save teeth and gums

In order to take good care of your teeth, dentists recommend eating these foods:

  • Carrots. Carotene is good for the mucous membranes of the mouth and the gums. It also makes tooth enamel stronger. Fresh carrots are a great way to maintain healthy teeth, it removes plaque and massages the gums.
  • Fish. Everyone knows that teeth need calcium, but phosphorus is also one of the most important elements for keeping the teeth healthy (but keep in mind that fish may cause an unpleasant odor).
  • Parsley. This is one of the main sources of calcium and besides, parsley has a cosmetic effect on the teeth (which we’ll touch on later in the article).
  • Apples. Apples are incredibly effective when it comes to treating tooth problems and preventing them. They massage the gums well and remove dental plaque all while making the breath fresher.
  • Kiwi. This fruit has a lot of vitamin C. If you lack vitamin C, the production of collagen decreases and gums start bleeding.
  • Onion. This is a natural antibiotic that kills harmful bacteria in the mouth.
  • Chicory. Its function is to stimulate the blood flow in the mouth.
  • Sesame. It removes dental plaque very well and makes the enamel stronger.
  • Cheese. Hard cheese has very little salt and a lot of calcium. Cheese helps to keep the right pH-balance that doesn’t let bacteria reproduce (some kinds of cheese can cause an unpleasant smell).
  • Green tea. The catechin in green tea kills the kinds of bacteria that cause cavities. Besides, green tea makes your breath very fresh.

Yummy food is great but dentists are sure that frequent snacking can harm teeth. If you’re constantly chewing something, you feed the bacteria in your mouth. A good thing to do is wash your mouth out even after a small snack.

Is the color of your teeth dictated by food?

If you don’t like the color of your teeth, there are things you can do about it. Aside from using different whitening procedures available to you, you should exclude foods that can change the color of your teeth.

01. Tooth “painters”

  • Tea and coffee. Green and white tea have the lowest effect on tooth color. Lemon or milk can neutralize the effects of these drinks though.
  • Red wine. Wine’s color and high level of tannins make it a champion at changing the color of teeth. After drinking red wine, you should wash your mouth out with clean water but don’t brush your teeth right away. Brushing will do more harm than good.
  • Juices. Bright fruit and vegetable juices have such a strong effect because they contain the acid that weakens the teeth and lets the coloring components get absorbed better. If we eat berries and vegetables, saliva is produced faster and washes away the coloring which doesn’t happen when we drink juices.

  • Beets and bilberries. A high concentration of chromogens in these foods makes the teeth yellow.
  • Spices. Curry and turmeric are especially good at changing the color of teeth even after eating them once. They can make your teeth look yellow or even red. It’s very hard to get rid of this color. If you ate something that contains these spices, drink green tea with lemon to neutralize its effect.
  • Soy sauce and balsamic vinegar. They often leave dark spots on the teeth.
  • Colorful soda. Soda contains a lot of chemical coloring which changes the color of teeth. It also destroys the enamel.

In order to neutralize these foods’ negative effects, wash your mouth out after eating and don’t forget about natural bleaches.

Natural bleaches

  • Pear. This fruit removes plaque and massages the gums.
  • Pumpkin. This is one of the best natural bleaches. You can achieve the best effect if you bake it in the oven or add it to a salad or smoothie.
  • Strawberry. Despite its bright color, it has a great whitening effect. It contains apple acid that removes dental plaque very effectively.
  • Broccoli. It can remove dark spots very well. It’s better to eat fresh broccoli. You can cut it into a salad or boil it just a little bit.
  • Celery. This is a 2 in 1 bleaching food. It helps to remove dental plaque and kills bacteria in the mouth.
  • Orange. The citrus acid whitens the teeth very well but people who have sensitive gums and teeth should be careful.
  • Parsley. After eating something, just chew on a little bit of parsley before washing out your mouth.

Products that influence smell and microflora

Unpleasant smelling breath can be a sign of a disease in extreme cases, but if you are healthy, it means that you need to make the microflora of your mouth more normal. Certain foods can be causing this bad breath.

For example, during the digestion of certain foods, sulfur compounds are produced. They are absorbed into the blood and then leave the body through the lungs. We can feel the unpleasant smell for a long time after we eat something.

Some foods and drinks that seem to have a pleasant smell actually do the opposite, like coffee, for example. They make the mucus of the mouth dry and increase the reproduction of bacteria.
