Finding out your blood type is actually pretty easy. All you need are 3 test tubes with 3 different reagents containing 3 different antibodies: A, B, and Rh. And a sample of blood, of course. Drop some blood into each test tube and watch for the contents to clump. Clumping means the blood is reacting with the same antibodies it has in itself and that’s how scientists figure out our blood type.

The idea is that our blood type is closely tied to our body’s ability to digest certain foods. So every blood type determines a suggested special diet for a person to follow to live their best, healthiest life. This approach was popularized by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo, after he published a book on this topic in 1996. But there is no agreement as to whether it actually works, because there are no studies that prove this theory right or wrong.
For people with type A blood, a vegetarian diet is suggested. It is said that people with this blood type have low levels of stomach acid and can’t digest animal protein and fat very well. That’s why it’s suggested that they eat a lot of fruits, vegetables, and grains. It’s important to have those foods in the most natural state possible — fresh and organic without any added ingredients.
According to the book, people with this blood type are considered to be omnivores, so they can eat a variety of foods. However, foods like corn, wheat, tomatoes, and peanuts can cause weight gain, fatigue, and hypoglycemia. Another food that people with this blood type should avoid is chicken. Even though it’s a lean meat, it can cause strokes and immune disorders in people with the B blood type. It’s better to substitute chicken with lamb, goat, or rabbit meat.
Type AB is the rarest and newest blood type. It has a mixed inheritance from types A and B. People with this blood type have low stomach acid like type A, but they also have type B’s adaptation to meat. Eggs, seafood, and leafy greens are good for people with this blood type. They are also advised to eat smaller portions more frequently because it’s better for their digestion.
People with this blood type supposedly have high stomach acid and have a very well-developed ability to digest both animal protein and fat. That’s why a diet high in protein, with a lot of good quality meats, fish, vegetables, and fruits works best for them. Carbs like grains, beans, and legumes can be easily stored as fat in their system. So if you are a type 0, it’s better to avoid them.
It sounds good in the book, but what about real life? Studies conducted in 2014 showed that people who followed the suggested diet did have health improvements. However, these improvements were found to be unrelated to blood type. In any case, all 4 of the diet plans are healthy and accompanied by an exercise regimen, they can turn into a healthy lifestyle and improve your overall well-being.
